On July 19, 2004, an amazing story, accompanied by incredible video footage, broke across network and cable news programs. After a high-speed chase to the top of Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge in Green Bay, Wisconsin, a young woman stopped, calmly stepped out of her car, walked to the edge of the bridge--and jumped. State trooper Les Boldt raced over, thrust out his hand, and in a miracle of timing and determination, snagged the woman's wrist as she started the plunge. Other officers ran to his aid, and they pulled the woman to safety while the on-dash police cam captured the action. That woman on the edge was Tina Zahn, and in Why I Jumped she tells her story for the first time. In this gripping book, readers are given a glimpse of what led to such severe depression that suicide seemed the only answer. Readers won't be able to put down this powerful, true story of postpartum depression, dramatic rescue, and a return to hope.

Having dealt with clinical depression for the last eighteen years the author has very clearly described what a chemical imbalance can do to a person's mind. I was a bit troubled by the author's desire to cling to her mother rather than merely moving on with her own life as I thought her mother was pulling her down. But then, gradually and finally decisively, she makes the transition to her own family. Depression is disabilitating say the least. The author shows courage to write about a disease that is often so misunderstood. Read this book. And if you struggle with depression, get help. And get help from a mental health professional. New medications and new insights are there. No one should have to struggle. The depression will remain but the pain will be lessened. And coping skills will make life a gift. And God is there.
Very well written book. Kept my interest to the end. I could feel her pain, fear and feelings of rejection and abandonment. A deeply moving story that also shows how God works through many people to heal us and that He will never abandon us. Mrs. Kahn was candid about her trauma, her actions and reactions to events and circumstances in her life and also that healing from these things is a journey, not an event. She very accurately described what deep depression is really like and how she overcame it. I would very much like to meet this woman some day.
Now I understand what could bring someone to try and kill themselves. I alsohave suffered from depression most of my life, but this woman's depression was toanother level due to a traumatic childhood and a somewhat crazy mother. It amazedme how well she is doing despite it all. She also shows that bringing the right group offriends into your life can change everything, the prayers sent up are not ignored and amiracle can save you in the nick of time
Wow! "Why I Jumped: A Dramatic Story of Finding Hope Beyond Depression" was definitely a story that explained everything. She took the leap and actually jumped, but through God's grace, she didn't fall the 200 feet into the water. Tina Zahn bared it all, and in the process, I believe in her writing journey possible made a complete healing in her spirit from post partum depression.I have sympathy for people with depression. I have never know depression to the depth of Tina's, yet her story helped me understand the turmoil going through not only her life, but the lives of other women the media has brought to light over the years about the subject of mothers killing their babies. It makes one ask the question, "Should we have sent women to jail in similar circumstances?" They weren't mean, dangerous, women. They were hopeless people who were at the end of their ropes in painful agony. They could find no way out!I appreciate that Tina Zahn wrote this book. I really do. If you are deeply depressed, I hope somehow you get a copy of this book and read it through. Maybe it will save your life and many others. It is a very clean book with no sexual descriptions or bad words, even though lots of events were described. I gave it five star for the purity alone in such an awful life full of drama.
This book goes into detail about why Tina had such a severe case of postpartum depression. The first 1/3 of the book is very well written and moves quickly, while the remainder of the book is much slower. It almost seems as if there were two different authors, there are two very distinct writing styles. I wish it were all written like the first 1/3. Still worth reading though!
I really enjoyed this book. I also tried to commit suicide and failed (thank God). It was comforting to realize that Tina felt many of the same feelings that I experienced. I also joined a very supportive church. With their help along with the proper medication and counseling I am doing much better today.
Tina's story is an eye opening account of what I believe many children have been forced to live with and how it affects them not only as a child but also as an adult. This is an excellent book for any mother dealing with PPD. A great book of hope and trusting God in the midst of very difficult circumstances. I appreciate Tina being willing to be so transparent and share her story.
This is a book that gives you insight into severe depression and the love of a family that would not ignore the issue. I am so glad that the author found closure and is living a good life now. There are parts about sexual abuse that literally turned my stomach as I read it. It is so hard to understand why an adult would want to take away a child's innocence and joy of childhood.
